In Yorkshire, a couple adopted an English Springer Spaniel named Spike. The pup was only six years old at that time. Couple Adores A Senior Dog, Takes Turns To Sleep With Him At Night
At first, they did not want to share their bed with a dog, but Spike was too sweet. So they ended up sharing their bed with him since his adoption day.
According to Catherine Morris, the couple’s daughter, her parents put a stair gate to prevent Spike from going to the bedrooms. When they got him, they closed the gate and went to bed. But Spike won’t let obstacles stop him from sleeping with his new owners.
The dog whined for a few minutes, probably contemplating his next move. But, then, he jumped over the stair gate like a pro, went straight to the couple’s room, and into their bed. He has slept with them on their bed since then.
Spike is naturally sweet and wants to cuddle with his humans at night. He never allows his owners to sleep without him. Sometimes, he would take up all the space on the bed, but his owners are already used to it.
Fast forward to today, Spike is already 14 years old. As he aged and suffered two strokes, it became harder for him to go upstairs. Finally, the couple thought of letting him sleep downstairs in the living area because of his condition.
The couple decided to take turns sleeping with him downstairs to prevent Spike from going upstairs. They know that Spike only has a few remaining years to live. And they want him to feel loved until the end, even if it means changing their bedtime routines.
Morris was in the university when the new sleeping routine started. But since she moved back home, she joined in taking turns. So now, they can get more time and sleep in the new way.
Spike’s owners may not have wanted him on their bed when he first came into their lives. But now, they love him unconditionally. And they will do everything so he can get a lovely night’s sleep each night.
