Plagued by the hardships of living as a stray, one dog shocked everyone with its appearance. This dog was extremely malnourished, her bones sticking out of her skin, and she also suffered from various skin conditions. And as they were left untreated, the dog’s face looked stone.
Petra
One woman spotted the dog, which they named Petra, the Greek word for stone, and took a picture of her. She posted the photo on Facebook, hoping someone capable of helping her would see it. Thankfully, someone did.
They went to the area and rescued the dog. But it wasn’t easy. Petra tried her best to evade capture, running away fast whenever someone tried to get close to her. But eventually, they succeeded.
The elusive dog was brought to the Save A Greek Stray shelter, a non-profit rescue organization based in Oropos, Greece. A vet looked her over and found that she suffers from various diseases. A treatment plan was created for her to relieve her of her painful condition.
It would be a long process to heal Petra’s body, but that was not their only concern. Observing the stray, they realized the dog had always been a stray. Her actions showed that she had never been around people that gave her love.
She feared humans and preferred to stay away from them. Petra never left her cage alone and would cower in a corner whenever someone came in for her. She would also growl and be defensive around other dogs.
But the shelter staff didn’t give up on her. Instead, they showed her that people could be trusted, and she learned this gradually. Eventually, she started tolerating being touched and even began to socialize. After a few painstaking months, she has made a complete turnaround.
Petra is no longer a malnourished and neglected dog. Instead, she is healthy and has grown a beautiful coat of fur. She is now waiting for her forever home.
