Sisko the Long Line Act

Sisko the Long Line Act

Sisko the Long Line Act
The dim lights of “The Laugh Riot” comedy club painted the room in a flattering, slightly orange glow. Kyson Hunter, his dark hair neatly trimmed, chuckled, a rare sight considering the seriousness usually plastered across his face at the precinct. Beside him, Sisko, a black shepherd her black fur gleaming, rested a powerful paw on Kyson’s leg, her ears perked in anticipation, not of a suspect, but of the upcoming jokes. Across from them sat Katie Morrison, her strawberry-blonde hair catching the light, and her tiny Jack Russell, Pip, a whirlwind of frantic energy.

“This is… surprisingly enjoyable,” Katie admitted, watching the comedian, a lanky man with a microphone stand that seemed to dwarf him.

Officers need to unwind

“I told you,” Kyson said, grinning. Officers need to unwind, too. Even if it’s with a ridiculous comedy show.”
The comedian launched into his set, and the audience settled in. Then he started his ‘long-line’ bit. It was a joke about a particularly convoluted bureaucratic process involving a misplaced stapler, a rogue hamster, and a disgruntled mime. The line stretched for what felt like an eternity, weaving across the stage like a particularly aggressive vine.
Pip squeaked, his little body wriggling.
“I can feel your nervousness, Pip,” Katie whispered, stroking his head.
The comedian’s voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper as the line reached its climax, “…and so the disgruntled mime, in a fit of existential angst induced by the hamster’s inexplicable escape from the stapler’s drawer, decided to…”
Suddenly, the microphone’s cord, stretched taut by the comedian’s dramatic movements, snaked out into the audience. Sisko, in her usual alert state, reacted instantly to a perceived threat – the moving cord. Before Kyson could react, she launched herself, aiming for the perceived “intruder”. Unfortunately, she misjudged the trajectory. Instead of seizing the cord, she became entangled in it, pulling the entire length of the microphone wire behind her.

Pip, startled by Sisko’s sudden lunge, leaped. In a bizarre twist of fate, he, too, got caught in the line, his tiny body becoming a furry knot in the thick cable.
“Oh, my…,” Katie gasped, a horrified giggle escaping her lips.
Kyson, initially stunned into silence, finally broke into laughter. “Well, this is a new one,” he said, trying to untangle the two dogs without causing further damage to the comedian’s equipment or the dogs themselves.
“I believe this is what they call a ‘dog’s breakfast, ‘” Katie added, her eyes twinkling with amusement.
Sisko, clearly unhappy with her predicament, let out a low growl. Pip, however, seemed to be enjoying the unexpected game of tug-of-war, yapping excitedly. The comedian paused his act, looking utterly bewildered, and started chuckling.
The chaos concluded with Kyson successfully freeing the dogs with apologies to the comedian. By that point, however, the entire audience was laughing, amused by the unintended comic relief provided by a determined K-9 officer and a plucky terrier. The incident made for quite the entertaining intermission. Even Sisko had to admit, despite the indignity of it all, the whole thing was rather ridiculous. And, as Kyson pointed out later, it was much more entertaining than any police report.
