Sisko the Spicy Chili Dog

Sisko the Spicy Chili Dog
The acrid smell, initially reported as smoke, hung heavy in the air of the grimy alleyway. Officer Kyson Hunter, his perpetually serious face etched with a slightly bewildered expression, held his nose with one hand and shielded his eyes from the flickering gaslight with the other. Beside him, Sisko, the sleek black Lab/ Shepherd Mix canine, sniffed the air with the intensity of a bloodhound on the trail of a particularly delicious sausage. Her powerful nose twitched, her tail giving a single, almost imperceptible thump against the damp concrete.

“Smoke, you say?” Kyson muttered, his voice muffled by his hand. “This ain’t no fire, this is…this is… pungent.”
Sisko, meanwhile, had pinpointed the source. Her gaze, sharp and unwavering, locked onto a dishevelled figure huddled in a doorway, a half-eaten hot dog clutched in one hand. The figure, a middle-aged man with a rather unfortunate beard, looked vaguely guilty, his eyes darting around nervously.

Oh, *sweet mercy

“Well, Sisko seems to have found our ‘fire’,” Kyson said, a faint smile playing on his lips. He lowered his hand, the smell hitting him full force. “Oh, *sweet mercy*.”
The man, noticing their approach, let out a sheepish cough. “Uh, officers? It’s… It’s a bit of a sensitive situation.”
Kyson raised an eyebrow, already suspecting the truth. “Sensitive how?”
“Well,” the man began, his voice cracking slightly, “I, uh… I had a bit of a… digestive… incident.”
Sisko let out a low growl, not of aggression, but of pure, unadulterated disgust. She nudged the man’s leg with her nose, a clear indication of her displeasure.
“A ‘digestive incident’,” Kyson repeated, trying to keep a straight face. “Care to elaborate?”
“It was… the chili dog,” the man confessed, his face turning a shade of red that rivalled the fire hydrant at the alley’s end. “From that new cart downtown… I think they might have, uh… over-spiced it.” He looked at Sisko, then back at Kyson, pleading with his eyes. “Please don’t write me up for this.”

Kyson sighed, the amusement battling with his professional demeanor. “Look, sir,” he said, trying to suppress a chuckle, “While I appreciate the candor, next time, maybe try a less… *explosive* culinary experience. And maybe find a less public place to, uh… release the pressure.”

Digestive incident

He gestured towards the alley’s grimy walls, already bearing the evidence of this “digestive incident.”
“Yes, sir. I understand. I’ll… I’ll be more careful.” The man looked like he was about to cry. “I swear, Officer, it wasn’t intentional. It was… a catastrophic failure of the system.”
Sisko, bored with the whole affair, started sniffing around a discarded dumpster, apparently searching for more interesting scents. Kyson watched her for a moment, a smile finally breaking through. “Come on, Sisko,” he said, scratching her head. “Another day, another… pungent mystery solved.” He added under his breath, “Though I’m not sure I’ll ever look at a chili dog the same way again.” As he and Sisko left the alleyway, the smell of the “digestive incident” was quickly replaced by the equally strong aroma of disinfectant, courtesy of the city’s sanitation department, who had arrived just in time to follow up on Kyson’s report.
