Sisko the Prominent Photo Album

The grand Victorian house loomed, its darkened windows reflecting the streetlights. Officer Kyson Hunter, alongside his K-9 partner, Sisko, a lean black Lab/Shepherd mix, surveyed the scene. A burglary had been reported – a stolen photo album, apparently of significant sentimental value to the homeowner, a renowned philanthropist.

Kyson knelt, allowing Sisko to sniff the disturbed area near the rear entrance. The dog’s black fur gleamed under the porch light as she meticulously investigated, her powerful nose twitching. After a few minutes, Sisko sat, her gaze fixed on a specific point – a loose brick near an overgrown section of the garden. Kyson carefully removed the brick, revealing a small, muddy footprint. He photographed it and collected a soil sample.

The trail led to the garden gate

Inside, the homeowner, Mrs. Albright, pointed out the empty display case where the album had been kept. Sisko, guided by Kyson, again worked the area, her nose detecting the faint scent lingering on the remaining dust. The trail led to the garden gate, then faded near the street.
“The scent’s faint but…distinct,” Kyson muttered, examining the faint marks on the ground. Sisko whined softly, her attention shifting towards a nearby alleyway.
Following the dog, they found a discarded newspaper, which was damp from the rain. The print was faint, but a small, torn corner of a receipt was visible; a local deli.
At the deli, surveillance footage revealed a man with a distinctive limp purchasing a coffee and pastry just before midnight – the time of the burglary. The man spoke rapidly in a language neither Kyson nor the deli owner recognized.
“No English?” Kyson asked, showing the deli owner a still image from the security camera.
The owner shook his head, muttering something in rapid-fire Spanish. He pointed to a nearby construction site. “Trabajador… calle… dos semanas…”
“Worker…street…two weeks,” Kyson translated, piecing together the fragmented information. He turned to Sisko. “Let’s check that construction site.”
At the site, Sisko began tracking the lingering scent. The man, identified later as Mateo Vargas, was found hiding amongst a pile of lumber.

Kyson approached cautiously. “Police! Hands where I can see them!” he yelled. Mateo, startled, slowly raised his hands.
The following exchange took place, heavily mediated by a translator called to the scene from a nearby university:

Where’s the album

Kyson: “Where’s the album?”
Translator (to Mateo): “Donde está el álbum?”
Mateo: “No… tengo… no se…” (I… don’t have… I don’t know…)
Kyson: “We found your receipt at the deli. Your scent trail leads here.”
Translator (to Mateo): “Hemos encontrado tu recibo en la tienda. Tu rastro nos ha llevado aquí.”
Mateo, understanding the game was up, eventually led them to a hidden compartment within a hollowed-out support beam. The photo album lay inside, pristine and untouched. The translator explained that Mateo had needed money urgently, having lost his job and not yet secured another job two weeks prior to the theft. He intended to return the album and leave town before anyone noticed its absence. The scene concluded with Mateo’s arrest and the safe return of the album to Mrs. Albright. Sisko, rewarded with a well-deserved pat and a chew toy, rode back to the precinct in the back of Kyson’s cruiser.
