Wrong Way

Wrong Way

MKPayne December 22, 2025
The patrol car, marked with the city’s police department’s familiar insignia, cruised down Elm Street. Inside, Officer Kyson Hunter, his short dark hair neatly styled, scanned the road ahead. Beside him, the muscular, all-black form of Sisko, the K-9 unit’s formidable Black Lab/Shepherd mix, sat alert, her powerful nose twitching subtly.
Wrong Way
Suddenly, Kyson’s eyes narrowed. A nondescript sedan was approaching them at a considerable speed, traveling directly against the flow of traffic on the one-way street. Kyson activated the car’s lights and siren, the urgent wail cutting through the evening quiet.

Hold on, Sisko

“Hold on, Sisko,” Kyson said, his voice calm and steady. He maneuvered the patrol car to intercept the errant vehicle. Sisko remained still, her dark eyes fixed on the approaching car.
The sedan braked sharply, pulling over to the curb just ahead of them. Kyson parked behind it, and he and Sisko exited the patrol car. As they approached the driver’s side window, Kyson noticed the driver fumbling with something in their lap.
“Evening, sir,” Kyson began, his tone professional. “Do you know why I pulled you over?”
The driver, a man with a slightly dazed expression, looked up. “Uh, no, officer, I don’t think so.”
Kyson gestured with his chin towards the road. “You were driving the wrong way down a one-way street.”
The driver’s eyes widened slightly. “Oh, wow. I… I didn’t even see the sign.” He held up a handheld gaming device. “I’m a video game tester, and I was really into this new build. Testing a… a virtual reality driving simulation, actually. I must have gotten a bit too immersed and forgot I was in the real world.”
Sisko, standing beside Kyson, let out a soft, low growl. Her powerful nose was actively working, taking in the scents emanating from the car. She nudged Kyson’s hand with her wet nose, a subtle signal.
Kyson’s gaze shifted from the driver to the interior of the car, following Sisko’s unspoken direction. He detected a faint, unusual odor clinging to the air, something sharp and chemical that didn’t align with the driver’s explanation of a video game.

An interesting choice

“A VR driving simulation, huh?” Kyson repeated, his eyes now fixed on the driver. “That’s… an interesting choice for a test environment.” He leaned in slightly, his own senses picking up on the faint but distinct aroma Sisko had alerted him to. “You know, testing is best done in a controlled environment. Like your living room, perhaps.”
The driver stammered, “Right, yes, of course. My apologies, officer. It won’t happen again.”
Kyson looked at Sisko, who remained impassive but alert. He then turned back to the driver, his expression serious. “We’ll need to see your driver’s license and registration, please. And I’d advise you to take your virtual driving to a place where it doesn’t put lives at risk.” The faint chemical scent, a mystery Sisko had so readily identified, hung in the air between them.
