Sisko the Water Supply

Sisko the Water Supply

Sisko the Water Supply
Chief Williams summoned Kyson Hunter and K-9 unit member Sisko to his office. He relayed a complaint from the cook at Rosie’s Diner regarding the city’s water supply. The cook suspected contamination. Officer Davies, known for his DIY skills, had already preliminarily inspected the city’s main water reservoir, finding no immediate issues.

“Kyson,” Chief Williams stated, “the cook’s adamant. He says the taste is off, and he’s experienced stomach cramps. Davies found nothing at the reservoir. Sisko, you’re up. Can you trace the source of the problem?”
Kyson nodded. “Davies, you’re with us. Your expertise might be useful.”

It started a few days ago

They arrived at Rosie’s Diner. The cook, a nervous man with flour dusting his apron, pointed towards a recently emptied water jug. “It started a few days ago. A subtle change, but unmistakable. And the smell…” he wrinkled his nose, “off.”
Sisko, her black fur gleaming, was already sniffing the discarded jug. She then moved systematically through the diner, her nose working, before focusing on a specific pipe beneath a sink. She began to paw at the area aggressively, whining softly.
“She’s pinpointing a leak under the sink,” Kyson observed, kneeling beside Sisko.

Officer Davies examined the pipe using a specialized inspection camera. “There’s a small crack here. It’s releasing a brownish residue,” Davies reported, showing Kyson the camera feed. “Looks like… soil leeching in from a nearby construction site.”
Kyson noted the proximity to a new housing development. “Davies, check the soil composition from that site. Look for anything unusual.”

It’s high in iron oxide

Davies returned ten minutes later, holding a small sample vial. “It’s high in iron oxide. Explains the discoloration and the metallic taste. The construction company is using a different type of pipe sealant that’s reacting with the soil.”
Kyson turned to Sisko, stroking her head. “Good girl. You saved the day.” Sisko thumped her tail in acknowledgement.
“Chief Williams,” Kyson said into his radio, “we’ve identified the source. Contaminated soil leached into the diner’s water supply due to a faulty pipe and new sealant. No malicious intent; purely negligence on the part of the construction firm.”
“Excellent work, Hunter,” Williams replied on the radio. “Ensure the construction company rectifies the situation immediately. Davies oversee the remediation. And Sisko… she deserves a good steak.”
Later that evening, back at the station, Kyson filled out his report. The case was closed. The leak was repaired, and the city’s water supply was deemed safe. The construction company was fined for negligence and ordered to replace the faulty pipes and sealant. The cook at Rosie’s Diner was relieved and grateful. Sisko, meanwhile, happily munched on a juicy steak, a well-deserved reward.
