Sisko the Old Mill

Sisko the Old Mill

MKPayne June 20, 2025
Sisko the Old Mill
The night was still, the only sounds the rhythmic crunch of Kyson Hunter’s boots on the gravel road and the soft padding of Sisko, his K-9 partner, at his side. The abandoned mill loomed ahead, its darkened windows like vacant eyes. Kyson adjusted his flashlight beam, noticing a flicker of light within. He signaled Sisko, who responded with a low growl and a slight prick of her ears.

Kyson and Sisko approached cautiously. The flicker of light resolved itself into a flashlight beam moving erratically within the mill’s dilapidated structure. They entered through a broken window, Sisko leading the way, her movements precise and controlled. The interior was dusty and choked with shadows. The flashlight beam paused, then swung towards them.

He stood revealed

A man, mid-forties, with grease-stained overalls and a nervous tremor in his hands, stood revealed. He held a rusty wrench.
“Who…who are you?” he stammered, his voice tight with fear.
“Officer Hunter, K-9 unit,” Kyson replied, his tone firm but not aggressive. “And this is Sisko. What are you doing here?”
“I… I used to work here,” the man said, his gaze darting around. “Before it closed down. They fired me unfairly. I just… I came back to look around.”

Sisko, meanwhile, had sniffed the man’s overalls, her tail giving a slight thump against the dusty floor. She did not display aggressive behavior but maintained a close watch.

What’s with the wrench?

“Look around? At three in the morning?” Kyson questioned, his skepticism evident. He gestured to the wrench. “And what’s with the wrench?”
“It… it’s just a wrench,” the man mumbled. “I found it lying around.” He shifted uncomfortably, avoiding eye contact.
“Is that all you were doing? Looking around with a wrench at 3 AM in an abandoned mill?”
“Yes sir!” the man responded quickly, avoiding Kyson’s gaze. He started to tremble slightly.
“Sisko detected traces of accelerant on your overalls near the pocket where you kept the wrench,” Kyson stated, his voice unwavering. “We’re taking you in for questioning on suspicion of arson and trespassing.”
The man’s face paled. He offered no further resistance as Kyson handcuffed him. Sisko remained alert, keeping a watchful eye on the apprehended suspect as they left the mill.
Back at the precinct, the man, identified as Mark Olsen, continued to deny any involvement in arson. However, the accelerant traces on his overalls, coupled with Sisko’s unwavering detection, provided compelling evidence. The investigation continued, but Olsen’s admission of trespassing, along with the circumstantial evidence, seemed to strengthen the case against him. Kyson completed his report, detailing the incident and Sisko’s crucial role in the arrest. The investigation into the possible arson attempt would continue. The night’s patrol concluded with a successful apprehension, a testament to the effectiveness of Kyson’s investigative skills and Sisko’s exceptional canine abilities.
