Sisko the Half Love Letter
The flickering gaslight cast long shadows across the rain-slicked alley. Kyson Hunter, his trench coat pulled tight, knelt beside a discarded dumpster. His partner, Sisko, a powerful Black Lab/German Shepherd mix, sniffed intently at a crumpled piece of paper partially hidden beneath a discarded pizza box. Sisko whined softly, nudging the paper with her nose. Kyson retrieved it: half of a torn love letter, the ink faded but legible. It read, “..my dearest, the moon hangs heavy tonight, like the weight of my longing. Meet me..” The rest was torn away.

“Good girl,” Kyson murmured, scratching behind Sisko’s ears. Sisko responded with a low growl, her gaze fixed on a shadowed corner of the alley.
Meanwhile, Chief Williams, alerted by the discovery, arrived. He surveyed the scene, his gaze sharp.
“Anything useful, Hunter?”
“Just a love letter, Chief. And Sisko thinks something’s in that corner,” Kyson replied, indicating the area with a nod. He shined his flashlight into the darkness.
Sisko’s senses heightened
Sisko, her senses heightened, remained tense. Then, a faint, ethereal glow emanated behind a stack of discarded crates. Kyson’s eyes widened. It wasn’t a person hiding; it was a faint, pulsing light, almost bioluminescent, seeming to originate from a small, intricately carved wooden box.
“Good God…” Chief Williams muttered, his voice barely audible above the city’s noise.
Kyson cautiously approached, Sisko at his heels. He picked up the box. It was warm to the touch.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Kyson said, holding up the small box, the faint glow emanating from within.
“Call forensics,” Chief Williams ordered. “We have more than a missing person on our hands.”
“The letter mentions meeting under the moon,” Kyson noted, examining the torn edges of the paper. “Maybe the box is linked somehow.”
Source is unknown
Later, at the precinct, Chief Williams sat reviewing the initial report. “Forensics confirms the box is of some unusual, possibly ancient origin. The glow is a form of bioluminescence, but the source is unknown. And, more perplexingly, the love letter connects to the victim in the missing person’s case, but the box contained only trace amounts of an unidentified plant resin.”
“No suspects from the letter,” Kyson stated. “But the box… it seems connected somehow.”
“Indeed,” Chief Williams agreed. “The mystery deepens. This isn’t just a missing person. It’s something far more unusual.” He paused, a thoughtful expression on his face. “And Sisko’s ability to locate the box, despite it being hidden in plain sight, is truly remarkable.”
Kyson nodded, looking at Sisko, resting comfortably near his feet. “Yeah, she’s one of a kind.”
