The Missing Locket

The Missing Locket

The Missing Locket
The streetlights cast long shadows as Kyson Hunter’s squad car idled outside a modest house. Beside him, Sisko, a sleek black Labrador-Shepherd mix, sat with her tail thumping a slow rhythm against the leather seat. Her nose twitched, sampling the evening air.—-
The Missing Locket
“She’s in there, Sisko,” Kyson murmured, his voice low. “Nurse Anya Sharma. She’s packing up her life tonight. Last chance to get this information.”—-
Sisko let out a soft huff, her ears perked. Kyson exited the vehicle, the gravel crunching under his boots. He approached the front door, Sisko trotting silently beside him. A small suitcase sat on the porch, a silent testament to Anya’s impending departure. Kyson knocked.—-
The Missing Locket
The door opened to reveal a woman with tired eyes and a weary smile. Anya Sharma. Her hands were stained with what appeared to be packing tape residue.—-
“Officer Hunter?” Anya asked, her voice a little hoarse. “And Sisko. Hello.”—-
“Nurse Sharma,” Kyson replied, offering a professional nod. “We apologize for the late hour. Chief Williams sent us.”—-

Is something wrong

“Chief Williams?” Anya repeated, a hint of surprise in her tone. “Is something wrong?”—-
“Not exactly wrong,” Kyson clarified. “More… urgent. We understand you’re leaving town tonight.”—-
Anya nodded, gesturing them inside. “I am. My transport is due in a couple of hours.” She led them into a living room that was partially dismantled, boxes stacked against the walls. “What can I do for you, Officer?”—-
Kyson met her gaze. “We’re working a case. A serious one. And your name came up. You were the attending nurse for the victim in the hospital, weren’t you?”—-
Anya’s brow furrowed. “Yes. I was. But I’ve already spoken to the investigating officers.”—-
“We know,” Kyson said. “But there are details… observations you might have made that weren’t deemed significant at the time. Sometimes, the smallest things are the most important.”—-
Sisko padded over to a corner of the room, sniffing intently at a discarded travel brochure. Her tail remained still.—-
“I told them everything I could remember,” Anya stated, her tone defensive. “I was busy. It was a difficult case.”—-
Kyson stepped closer. “We understand. And we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t vital. This person… they are still out there. And your testimony, your perspective, might be the key to bringing them to justice. You’re known throughout the town, Nurse Sharma. Everyone says you’re the best. They say you have a way of noticing things others miss.”—-
Anya looked at Kyson, then at Sisko, who had now moved to the entryway, her nose nudging a scuff mark on the floor.—-
“I… I don’t know what else I could possibly add,” Anya said, her voice softer now.—-

There was a particular detail

“There was a particular detail,” Kyson pressed. “Something about the victim’s belongings. A small, insignificant item that seemed out of place. Did you notice anything like that?”—-
Anya chewed on her lip, her gaze distant. She walked over to a partially packed box and rummaged through it. Kyson watched, his posture relaxed but alert. Sisko remained by the door, occasionally looking towards Anya.—-
“There was… a small, tarnished silver locket,” Anya said, her voice barely a whisper. “It wasn’t in the victim’s personal effects when they were admitted. It was found tucked under the hospital bed, almost as if someone had dropped it and tried to retrieve it discreetly. I mentioned it, but the officers seemed to dismiss it. Said it was probably a patient’s keepsake.”—-
Kyson’s eyes widened almost imperceptibly. He pulled out a small notebook. “A locket. And you said it was tarnished?”—-
“Yes. Not new. It looked old. And it was quite heavy for its size.” Anya’s expression shifted, a flicker of concern replacing the weariness.—-
Sisko, who had been quietly observing, now trotted back to Kyson’s side. She nudged his hand with her nose, then looked back towards the door.—-

This is exactly what we needed

“Thank you, Nurse Sharma,” Kyson said, his voice filled with a newfound urgency. “This is… this is exactly what we needed.” He scribbled furiously in his notebook.—-
Anya watched him, a question on her lips. “What will you do with this?”—-
“We will follow up on it,” Kyson replied. He looked at his watch. “And we will try to be as quick as possible. We truly appreciate your time. And Sisko, she… she agrees.” He gave Sisko a subtle pat on the head.—-
As they walked back to the car, Sisko’s powerful nose was already working, sampling the air from Anya’s doorway. Kyson opened the passenger door for her.—-
“Good girl, Sisko,” Kyson said, as Sisko jumped in. “You smelled that, didn’t you? The lingering scent. Something about that locket.”—-
Sisko whined softly, then settled back in her seat, her focus now entirely on the scent trails Kyson would lead her on. Chief Williams would be pleased. The best nurse in town had just provided the piece of the puzzle they desperately needed.
