Sisko the New Recruit
At the precinct, Chief Williams, a veteran officer with a stern yet fair demeanor, addressed Officers Kyson Hunter and Sisko, a black Lab/shepherd mix K-9. “Officer Hunter, this is Officer Davies. He’ll be working alongside you and Sisko. Davies, this is Kyson and Sisko, they’re the best in the unit.”

Officer Davies, a young man with neatly trimmed hair and a slightly nervous energy, adjusted his uniform. He carried a small, well-worn toolkit. “It’s an honor, sir. I’m eager to learn.” He offered a tentative smile.

Kyson nodded curtly. “Let’s get started then. We have a break-in at the Peterson residence. Sisko, you’re up.”
Her eyes focused intently
Sisko, a lean, muscular black lab, whined softly, tail wagging slightly, her eyes focusing intently on a scent sample provided by Williams. She sniffed it methodically before turning, tugging gently on her lead toward the department’s vehicle.
During the drive, Davies meticulously adjusted the vehicle’s emergency lights, explaining to Kyson that he had improved the mounting system, making them more aerodynamic. “Improves fuel efficiency by 1.2%, I calculated,” he added proudly.
At the Peterson residence, crime scene tape cordoned off the area. Detectives were already present, cataloging the scene. The entry point showed signs of forced entry—a surprisingly clean job, despite the chaotic state within. Kyson briefed Davies, highlighting the unusual precision of the break-in.
“Sisko, find the perp’s scent,” Kyson commanded, pointing towards the disturbed area.
Sisko, with laser focus, tracked a faint scent across the floor, up a nearby bookshelf, and onto a windowsill. She paused, sniffing intensely before her attention shifted to a small, seemingly insignificant scratch on the window frame. Davies, noticing her focus, pointed out his discovery of a tiny metal shaving near the scratch—a trace of unusual metal, he determined with his specialized tool.
“Interesting, Davies. It wasn’t part of the window frame. Perhaps a tool,” Kyson observed, examining the shaving. “Sisko, follow that scent again.”
Traces of the unusual metal
Sisko picked up the trail again, leading them towards a nearby alleyway. She stopped abruptly, indicating a specific dumpster. Kyson cautiously examined the dumpster, finding a discarded glove, a small, specialized screwdriver with traces of the unusual metal, and a faint whiff of something akin to motor oil, which Sisko alerted to by digging excitedly at the dumpster’s bottom.

“Davies, your metal analysis skills are valuable. This isn’t just a random break-in,” Kyson said, regarding the evidence.
“Indeed,” Davies replied, pulling a small notebook and pen, already documenting and analyzing their findings. “The trace metal composition suggests a very specific type of high-end security tool, used in a highly specialized method of lockpicking. The perpetrator is likely a professional, but left some pretty unconventional residue.”
They returned to the station. Using the information gathered by Sisko and Davies’s metallurgical analysis of the metal shaving, Kyson quickly established a connection to a known security specialist, suspected of being involved in a series of high-profile art thefts. The case was closed within hours. Chief Williams, impressed by the collaboration and efficiency, gave a rare nod of approval. “Davies, you’re officially part of the K-9 unit,” he said. “Keep up the good work.”
