Sisko the Carved Bird Two

The annual city parade had ended in chaos. A suspect, apprehended by Officer Kyson Hunter and K-9 Sisko, had been found in possession of a small, intricately carved bird. A preliminary examination revealed a minute amount of blood on the carving. Chief Williams, alerted to the situation, arrived at the precinct’s forensics lab.
“Kyson, report,” Chief Williams stated, his tone businesslike.
“Sir, we apprehended the suspect, Mr. James Reed, near the parade route. Sisko alerted me to his presence. The bird was found in a backpack. We’re currently trying to identify the blood type,” Hunter replied, gesturing to the evidence bag.

Scent of blood

Sisko, a lean, black Lab Shepherd, sat calmly at Hunter’s feet, her tail thumping rhythmically against the floor. Her keen nose had initially identified the scent of blood, leading them to Reed.
The lab technician, Dr. Anya Sharma, entered. “The blood is a match. It belongs to Ms. Evelyn Reed, Silas Reed’s estranged wife. We’ve also found trace amounts of her DNA on the carving.”
“Estranged wife? Interesting,” Chief Williams observed, with a slight furrow in his brow.
“Sir, Sisko picked up a faint scent trail from the carving,” Hunter added. “It led us to a specific location – a secluded alleyway behind the Reeds’ former residence.”
The scene shifted to the alleyway. Kyson and Sisko, the black lab/shepherd mix, followed by Chief Williams, carefully examined the area. Sisko sniffed intently, her attention focused on a small, discarded piece of fabric. Hunter retrieved it.

“It’s a torn piece from Evelyn Reed’s favorite scarf,” Hunter said, showing Chief Williams the fabric. “Looks like a struggle.”
Chief Williams looked at the evidence— the carved bird, the blood, the fabric. “James claims the carving is an antique, a family heirloom.”
“He claimed he found the bird on the ground, near the parade route, and panicked after seeing the blood. Didn’t offer any further explanation for the blood or the fabric,” Hunter explained.

It’s more than coincidence

“It’s more than coincidence, Kyson,” Chief Williams commented. “The blood, the scarf piece, the location… it points to a more complex situation than a simple theft.”
“Sisko,” Kyson said quietly, addressing the dog, “Find something else.”
Seemingly understanding the unspoken command, Sisko began investigating a nearby dumpster. She nudged a half-buried bag with her nose. Hunter carefully retrieved it, revealing a small, ornate box.

“Another heirloom?” Hunter asked, his voice almost a whisper.
Dr. Sharma, having been called back, examined the box. “It’s a jewelry box. Inside, a single pearl earring. It matches the earring Ms. Reed was known to wear. It’s significantly damaged, almost shattered.”
Silence descended, broken only by Sisko’s soft panting. Chief Williams looked from the earring to Hunter, a grim understanding passing between them.
“James Reed’s story doesn’t hold water,” Chief Williams stated. “The bird… a threatening gesture perhaps? The earring…evidence of a violent confrontation?”
Hunter nodded. “Looks like we’ve got enough to arrest him for assault, at least. Ms. Reed’s testimony will determine the charges going forward.
Sisko, you’ve done it again.” He scratched the dog behind her ears, acknowledging her crucial role in uncovering the truth. The case, though seemingly straightforward at first, had revealed a much darker narrative, and Sisko’s exceptional olfactory skills had been the key to unveiling it.
