New Coach

New Coach

New Coach
The cruiser idled at the curb, its emergency lights a soft pulse against the late afternoon sun. Kyson Hunter leaned against the passenger door, arms crossed, while Sisko, a sleek, black form of muscle and fur, sat attentively by his side. A battered pickup truck was pulled over a few yards ahead, hood propped open, revealing a tangle of hoses and wires. A man, mid-thirties with a bewildered expression, fiddled with a wrench.

“Anything wrong, officer?” the man called out, his voice tinged with desperation.

Just checking if you needed a hand.

Kyson pushed off the car. “Just checking if you needed a hand. S, see you’ve got the hood up.”
“Yeah, she’s being temperamental. Just moved into town, and this is the first challenge I’ve encountered,” the man replied, wiping grease on his jeans.
Sisko’s tail gave a single, controlled thump against the asphalt. She lifted her head, nostrils flaring, a subtle tremor running through her powerful frame. Her gaze, fixed on the man’s hands, was unwavering.
“My name’s Kyson Hunter,” Kyson offered, extending a hand. “This is my partner, Sisko.”
The man shook Kyson’s hand. “Mark Jensen. Nice to meet you. And her.” He gestured to Sisko. “She’s got a good nose, doesn’t she?”
“That’s an understatement,” Kyson said, a faint smile touching his lips. Sisko’s olfactory capabilities were legendary within the precinct, her ability to track scents and pinpoint individuals a critical asset. She had a knack for distinguishing minute variations, a talent that had led to countless apprehensions.
Mark gestured to the engine. “I think I’ve got a coolant leak, but I’m not entirely sure where it’s originating from. Just trying to get her running well enough to get to the school.”
“School?” Kyson inquired.

Starting my first day on Monday

“That’s right. I’m the new head football coach at Northwood High. Starting my first day on Monday.” Mark let out a sigh. “Just wanted to get everything in order before then.”
Sisko, who had been sniffing the air around the truck, turned her attention to the open hood, her black fur a stark contrast against the faded paint. She lowered her head, her sensitive nose tracing a path along the engine block. A low growl rumbled in her chest, not of aggression, but of intense focus. She nudged a specific hose with her snout, then looked back at Kyson, a clear indication in her stance.
New Coach
“She seems interested in this hose here,” Kyson observed, crouching down to get a closer look. He followed Sisko’s indicated spot with his eyes. “Looks like a crack, actually. Small, but it’d definitely be a leak.”
Mark peered at the hose. “You’re right! I didn’t even see that. Good eye, Sisko. And good nose, I guess.” He produced a roll of heavy-duty tape from his toolbox. “This should hold it for now.”
Kyson watched as Mark expertly wrapped the hose, the urgency in his movements subsiding with each turn of the tape. Sisko remained close, her tail now relaxed, but her senses still alert, taking in the unfamiliar scents of the street and the man. The air, previously filled with the metallic tang of engine trouble and the faint exhaust fumes, now carried the smell of fresh coolant and the subtle, distinct aroma of the new coach.
