Sisko the Unwanted Inheritance

Sisko the Unwanted Inheritance

Sisko the Unwanted Inheritance
The acrid smell of burning wood and plastic hung heavy in the air as Kyson Hunter, a lean figure in his police uniform, knelt beside the smoldering remains of a downtown townhouse. His partner, Sisko, a sleek black Lab/shepherd mix with rippling muscles, sniffed at the charred debris, her tail a metronome against the ground. Chief Williams arrived moments later, his face grim.

“Anything, Kyson?” Williams asked, his voice low.
“Preliminary assessment suggests arson, Chief,” Kyson replied, pointing to a distinct pattern of accelerant distribution. “The fire started in the back, quickly spreading to the upper floors. Looks deliberate.”

Discarded newspaper

Sisko, meanwhile, had moved away from the main fire zone, her nose twitching, following a faint trail. She circled a nearby alley, her attention fixed on a discarded newspaper. Kyson watched her, a flicker of understanding in his eyes. He retrieved the paper; a smudged fingerprint was visible on the corner.
“Sisko’s picking up something,” Kyson said, examining the print. “A faint trace of accelerant, but more importantly…a scent trail.”
He followed Sisko as she led them to a nearby pawn shop. The owner, a nervous man with shifty eyes, emerged when they approached.

“Officer Hunter, what a surprise,” the pawnbroker said, his voice tight. “Anything I can help you with?”

Your fingerprints are on it

“We’re investigating the fire at the Miller residence,” Kyson stated, holding up the newspaper. “This was found near the scene, and your fingerprints are on it.”
The pawnbroker stammered, his eyes darting around. “I…I don’t know anything about a fire.”
“We have reason to believe you do,” Williams interjected. “Mr. Finch, the Millers recently passed away, leaving a substantial inheritance to their nephew, Edward Miller. We understand you purchased several items from him recently – items of significant value.”
“That’s…that’s just a coincidence,” Finch mumbled, sweat beading on his forehead.
“Coincidence?” Kyson echoed. “Sisko’s picked up a distinct trace of the same accelerant used in the fire on your person, Mr. Finch. Additionally, forensic analysis matches the fingerprint on the newspaper to you.”
“He wanted the money, Chief,” Kyson explained later, back at the precinct, as the forensic report confirmed the evidence. “But he didn’t want the hassle of probate. So, he torched the house, then quickly sold off some valuable items to disguise the inheritance.”
Chief Williams nodded, his expression unreadable. “A clean sweep, almost. Except for Sisko’s nose,” he said, a hint of grudging admiration in his tone. “That dog is something special.” Kyson smiled faintly, glancing at Sisko, who was now napping peacefully at his feet, oblivious to the success of her work. The case was closed, and the credit, largely unspoken, went to the intuitive, keen-nosed K-9 officer.
